Egg Donation Step by Step: A Guide for Intended Parents
For many individuals and couples, egg donation offers a powerful and proven path to parenthood when using their own eggs is not possible or no longer the best option. While the idea of egg donation may feel complex at first, the process itself is highly structured, carefully regulated, and—when guided by the right agency—remarkably seamless.
At Luxe IVF, egg donation is designed to be transparent, personalized, and fully supported from your first search to pregnancy and beyond. This guide explains how egg donation works for intended parents, while also outlining what the process looks like specifically when working with our agency.
Step 1: Deciding If Egg Donation Is Right for You
Egg donation may be recommended for a variety of reasons, including diminished ovarian reserve, premature ovarian insufficiency, genetic concerns, repeated IVF failure, or age-related infertility. It is also a highly successful option for same-sex male couples and single parents building their families.
Before beginning, intended parents typically consult with a fertility specialist to review medical history, treatment goals, and success rates. This initial guidance helps confirm whether egg donation aligns with your reproductive plan and long-term family goals.
Step 2: View and Select an Egg Donor

The egg donation journey with Luxe IVF begins by registering to view our egg donor database. Each donor profile is carefully curated and includes detailed information to help you make an informed and confident choice.
Donor profiles typically include:
- Physical characteristics and ethnic background
- Educational background and personal interests
- Medical and family health history
- Genetic screening results
- Psychological evaluation clearance
At Luxe IVF, you can choose from four types of donors based on your preferences for privacy and contact:
- Anonymous Donor: No identifying information is shared with intended parents.
- Limited Donor: Some non-identifying background information is shared.
- Open Donor: The donor agrees to possible future contact once the child reaches adulthood.
- Known Donor: A donor you personally know and have an established relationship with.
Once you’ve identified donors you’re interested in, you’ll complete our Intended Parent Application. From there, our experienced team works closely with you to help select the donor that best matches your preferences, values, and treatment goals.
If you also require a sperm donor, our team can guide you through that process as well, ensuring all aspects of your care are coordinated.
Step 3: Choosing Your Fertility Clinic
Intended parents may choose to complete their journey using Luxe IVF’s trusted fertility clinic and laboratory—from egg retrieval through embryo transfer—or work with a fertility clinic of their own choosing.
If you elect to use a different clinic, our team collaborates directly with their staff to ensure:
- All medical requirements are met
- Proper equipment and protocols are in place
- Eggs or embryos are safely received and handled
We also coordinate with third-party reproductive specialists well in advance of embryo transfer, so every detail is confirmed long before treatment begins.
Step 4: Comprehensive Screening and Evaluations
Egg donation involves extensive screening to protect both donors and intended parents. At Luxe IVF, we seamlessly coordinate all required evaluations, including:
- Medical and infectious disease screening
- Genetic carrier testing
- Psychological evaluations
- Clinic-specific fertility assessments
We work directly with your IVF clinic, licensed mental health professionals, and genetic specialists to ensure every requirement is met efficiently and with care—removing unnecessary stress from your experience.

Step 5: Legal Agreements and Coordination
Once all medical and psychological screenings are complete, legal agreements are finalized before moving forward with the donation cycle. These contracts are a critical part of the egg donation process and are designed to protect everyone involved.
Both the intended parents and the egg donor are provided independent legal representation to review and explain all agreements in detail. These contracts clearly outline:
- Parental rights and responsibilities
- Confidentiality and anonymity preferences
- Financial terms and obligations
- Expectations regarding future contact, if applicable
At Luxe IVF, we coordinate closely with reproductive attorneys, your clinic, and all third-party professionals to ensure contracts are completed efficiently—allowing the medical process to move forward without delays or uncertainty.
Step 6: Donor Egg Retrieval
Once legal agreements are finalized, the donor begins a carefully monitored stimulation cycle under the supervision of a fertility clinic. When the eggs are ready, the donor travels to your chosen clinic for retrieval.
- Fresh Egg Donation: Eggs are retrieved and immediately fertilized using the intended parent’s sperm or donor sperm.
- Frozen Egg Donation: If you selected frozen eggs from our database, Luxe IVF coordinates secure transport of the eggs to your clinic, where they are thawed and fertilized.
The retrieval process is minimally invasive for the donor and typically requires only a short recovery period.

Step 7: Fertilization, Genetic Testing, and Transfer Preparation
After fertilization, embryos are monitored in the laboratory as they develop. Many intended parents choose to biopsy embryos for PGT-A testing to assess chromosomal health before transfer.
At this stage, embryos may be:
- Prepared for a fresh transfer
- Cryopreserved (frozen) for transfer at a later date
Before embryo transfer, your reproductive endocrinologist will guide you through any required testing or preparation. Luxe IVF coordinates the secure transport of embryos or frozen eggs and ensures everything arrives safely and ready for the next step in your journey.
Step 8: Embryo Transfer and Pregnancy

Once transfer takes place, pregnancy testing follows shortly after. While every journey is unique, egg donation offers some of the highest success rates in fertility treatment, and many families achieve pregnancy on their first transfer.
Throughout this final stage, our team remains involved—providing support, communication, and coordination as you move toward pregnancy.
Emotional Support Throughout the Journey
Egg donation is not only a medical process—it is an emotional one. Intended parents may experience a mix of grief, relief, excitement, and hope. Working with an experienced agency ensures you are supported through every emotional and logistical milestone.
At Luxe IVF, we prioritize compassion, clarity, and trust, so you never feel alone in the process.
